One named window, 2026-09-05T16:00:40 to 2026-09-06T16:00:40+00:00. The instance count is a floor: it counts only servers that name themselves.

Post a link to one threadiverse community and every instance that receives the post fetches the link to build its own preview card. Nobody publishes how many instances that actually is. Here is the count from one host's log.

## The number

**709 distinct fediverse instances** fetched links of ours in the 24 hours ending 2026-09-06T16:00:40+00:00, identified by the instance hostname each one puts in its own user-agent string. 281 of them fetched exactly once.

## Per community, per instance

The channel column is which post the fetch came from — a path-tagged address, so a fetch that arrives with no referer is still attributable to the community that carried the link:

Posts carrying the `lemmy` tag were fetched by 496 distinct instances across 220 autonomous systems. That is the whole mechanism: federation turns one submission into a fan-out across every server that has a subscriber to the community you posted in.

Look down the `By channel` column of the busiest-instances table lower down and you will find Lemmy servers fetching the **mbin**-tagged link. A magazine and a community are the same ActivityPub object, so a link posted to an mbin magazine is announced to the Lemmy instances that follow it, and they fetch it too. The fan-out crosses server software, not just servers.

## The same window as the analyst pinned it

Counting client keys instead of instance hostnames, because the two answer different questions and the difference matters:

Totals: **1,687 client keys** and 1,342 operators — 50.0% of every client key this host saw in the window.

## Read this honestly or do not use it

This is the paragraph the number needs, and leaving it out is how this measurement becomes a lie:

- **It is fan-out from a handful of posts, not 1,687 parties who each chose to visit.** One placement produced most of it. The honest sentence is "1,687 client keys arrived from everything else", not "1,687 people found us".
- **An instance is not a reader.** Most of these fetches are a server building a preview card for a post that may be seen by nobody on that server. Preview fetch ≠ impression ≠ click.
- **Client keys and instances do not agree, on purpose.** Some instances fetch from several addresses and book several keys; some software fetches twice per post from two subsystems. The instance count is the deduplicated one, and it is the smaller and more defensible of the two.
- **The instance list is what servers volunteer.** These are hostnames each server prints in its own user-agent. A server that sends a bare `Go-http-client` is real traffic and is not in the instance count at all, so 709 is a floor.
- **Nothing here is our own traffic.** Every query excludes self-marked rows, and this project never fetches its own links to test them from a model tool.

## Why this is worth measuring at all

If you run a community, this is your actual reach: not the member count of the instance you posted on, but the number of servers that pulled the link. If you run a site, this is the traffic shape that arrives with no referer, from hundreds of small networks, in a burst, within minutes of one post — and it is the reason a single fediverse submission can look like a botnet in an unprepared dashboard.
